Chart: Mass layoff initial claimants in manufacturing

In June, 18 of the 21 manufacturing subsectors experienced over-the-year decreases in initial claims, led by transportation equipment (‑20,391, on a not seasonally adjusted basis) and machinery (‑12,315). This is according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Within manufacturing, the number of claimants in June 2010 was greatest in the transportation equipment and food subsectors.

The manufacturing sector accounted for 12 percent of all initial claims filed in June; the lowest proportion in program history. In June 2009, manufacturing made up 33 percent of initial claims.
