Seymour Manufacturing Company of Seymour, Ind., will be featured on the “Modern Marvels: Shovels” television program that can be seen on the History Channel on Wednesday May 3 at 9 p.m. EST and again on Thursday May 4 at 1 a.m. EST.
The “Shovels” episode of the Modern Marvels series takes an in-depth look at the history of shovels covering everything from the hand shovels made in Seymour to the gigantic power shovels used in mines. The part of the program that features Seymour Manufacturing covers the design and manufacturing of hand shovels.
Two Seymour Manufacturing employees were interviewed on camera and will appear on the show. Berl Grant, president and CEO, reviewed aspects of shovel design and manufacturing. Jack Mendell, marketing manager, explained the many different types of shovels and their uses.
Modern Marvels mixes narration, archival film, interviews, and computer-animated illustrations to produce shows about technology and the people who imagine and make it. Each episode answers the age-old question “How did they do that?” by explaining the history and inner workings of man-made wonders like the Golden Gate Bridge or everyday items like shovels. The show is designed for people who like to dig deeper, explore further, and get closer to the knowledge that shapes everyday life.
This episode of Modern Marvels will make some history of its own. It is the first episode to be filmed in high definition format. There have been about 400 previous episodes.
