In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive maintenance and business world, effective leadership and communication play crucial roles in driving organizational success. Leadership isn’t just about overseeing tasks and making decisions; it involves inspiring and guiding teams toward achieving a common goal.

Similarly, communication serves as the lifeblood of any organization, ensuring seamless collaboration, efficient problem-solving, and the exchange of valuable information. Managers Think About Execution, Leaders Think About Ideas

There is a big difference between managing and leading. Even though certain skills and elements are similar and cross-functional, managers focus on the execution of the company’s vision and direction to ensure goals are met. Leaders, on the other hand, are progressive entrepreneurial thinkers who set that vision and direction.

In simple terms, managers think about execution, and leaders think about ideas.  

Some of the best managers are exceptional in watching the bottom line and providing processes, workflows, and tools. However, they lack the skills needed to empower their teams to make incremental changes. Leaders must be influential and empathetic towards the people they lead and the customers they serve, never losing sight of the fact that they must communicate every step of the way.

Leaders Inspire Others

Most of us can recall examples of what we would consider an exceptional leader – someone we strive to emulate, such as a coach, boss, teacher, or parent. I personally have examples of each that have had a life-changing impact and influence on me.

My father was the type of man who walked into a room and commanded the respect and attention of others before a word was ever spoken. He had a quality about his presence that spoke of action and credibility, and people always remembered him. He taught me many valuable life lessons, and if I could talk to my younger self, I would tell him, “You might want to write that down.”

I also had a high school football coach and an NCO officer in the military that were exceptional leaders. Every word they spoke inspired confidence in my ability to successfully achieve our common goals. They made me feel 14 feet tall and bulletproof, and they showed me that a leader needs to inspire others to be the greatest versions of themselves.

All these men were larger than life and empowered others to be more than they could be on their own. As a result of these experiences, I came to understand that everything in life, maintenance, and business succeeds or fails based on the strength of an organization’s leader.

An effective leader must possess strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to motivate and inspire others. This involves being “front-sight focused” and not allowing peripheral distractions to interfere with your efforts.

Good communication creates a sense of trust and engagement within teams, empowering individuals to contribute their best efforts. Leaders must actively listen to their team members, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

Additionally, leaders should tailor their communication style to suit the diverse needs of team members, ensuring clarity and understanding across all levels and departments.

The importance of a leader’s words cannot be stressed enough. Before you can lead your team, you must understand the end goal and how to effectively communicate this vision so team members know how to participate fully in the journey toward success.

Communication in Problem-Solving and Decision-Making

In the maintenance and business world, effective problem-solving and decision-making processes rely on clear and concise communication. Leaders should encourage open dialogue and brainstorming sessions to foster creativity and generate innovative solutions.

Leaders should leverage the workforce’s collective intelligence and diverse perspectives by actively involving team members in decision-making, which leads to better outcomes. When establishing this open brainstorming environment, take special care never to immediately dissect or cast aside the ideas your teams offer up. Nothing will kill morale and creative potential quicker.

Deciding on which ideas to pursue should happen later in a separate process where you can delve into the possibilities and outcomes of implementing these ideas. Never underestimate the power of mentorship. As a leader, you are not there by accident – you have worked hard, and you were chosen purposefully for your specific strengths and potential. Along that path to leadership, someone mentored you, and you must be willing to do the same for others.

Confident and capable leaders hire smart people – smarter than themselves, even – and teach them everything they know. This creates a legacy that will outlast the test of time and perpetuate a culture of continual growth.
