Heidtman Steel Products Inc., one of the nation’s largest privately held steel processors and marketers, announced that it will expand its steel processing operations in Butler, Ind., creating 18 new jobs.

The company, which specializes in processing and marketing flat-rolled carbon steel, will invest $13.5 million to build and equip a 120,000-square-foot addition to its manufacturing operations, making room for a new multi-stamping, blanking and steel slitting operation.

"Decisions like the one Heidtman Steel is making to invest in its Indiana operations reflects a growing confidence in the business climate of our state," said Nathan Feltman, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Located adjacent to global steel giant Steel Dynamics, Heidtman Steel employs 203 associates in Butler.  The company, which operates two additional facilities in Indiana, will begin hiring machine operators and materials handlers in 2008 as part of its expansion in Butler.

"The demand for our steel products continues to grow," said Scott Carter, general manager of operations for Heidtman Steel. "This expansion allows us to upgrade our technology and meet the needs of the market."

Headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, Heidtman Steel processes nearly five million tons of steel annually through its Heidtman facilities or through joint ventures. The companies more than 1,200 customers include clients in industries ranging from the automotive and trailer markets to manufacturers of metal buildings and appliances.

"Once again we are witnessing an expansion in the Butler Industrial Corridor," said Mayor Butch Coburn. "We hope other industries will take notice of the opportunity to grow and expand in DeKalb County."

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Heidtman Steel Products up to $400,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $43,500 in training grants based upon the company’s announced expansion and job creation plans. DeKalb County, through the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership, will provide the company with property tax abatment.
