Nissan rated among top companies in CSR reporting

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

Nissan Motor Company Ltd. has been rated among the top 50 companies in the world in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting, according to a leading survey from Global Reporters. Five Japanese companies were named in the Top 50. Nissan was ranked 49th on the list. In addition, Nissan was the only other automotive company in the Top 50, aside from Ford Motor Company.

Global Reporters is a survey jointly conducted by business strategy consultancy and think-tank SustainAbility Ltd., the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and Standard & Poor’s (S&P), which evaluates CSR reporting by companies worldwide according to globally accepted standards. The survey distinguishes the Top 50 companies that have established the best practices in CSR reporting. The report has been released bi-annually since 1994. This year’s “Global Reporters Survey 2006” was released on November 9.

This is the first time that Nissan has made the Top 50 CSR list. This acknowledgement underscores Nissan’s strong commitment to corporate social responsibility, based on the principles of corporate governance, accountability and transparency, as reflected in its CSR reporting standards of practice.

Nissan released its first annual Environmental Report in 1998, followed by a more comprehensive Sustainability Report in 2004, which covers all of its CSR practices including environment matters. The third edition of Nissan’s “Sustainability Report 2006” outlines the company’s newly defined CSR policy and nine key areas of focus – integrity, quality, safety, economic contribution, environment, value chain, brand, employees and philanthropy.

The Global Reporters’ methodology involves the survey of approximately 100 companies shortlisted from around the globe and evaluated by a team of renowned experts to determine the Top 50. The judging criteria include the clarity of a company’s sustainability strategy and an evaluation on the level of commitment and transparency of the CSR activities reported.
