IBM on October 13 announced that it is the systems integrator for NV Energy's Advanced Service Delivery project that includes smart grid technology, advanced meter infrastructure and meter data management. NV Energy, serving 1.4 million electric and gas customers in Nevada, is leading a comprehensive deployment of smart grid technologies, with support from the Department of Energy's (DOE) $138 million stimulus grant.
IBM is teaming with NV Energy by providing expertise in systems integration, system architecture, business process and business analytics. In addition, NV Energy will use IBM software products to integrate new advanced metering, meter data management, and demand response systems with existing applications including customer and geographic information systems.
IBM joined with NV Energy yesterday at its 'Envision' education event to discuss the consumer benefits of smart grids, referred to as Advanced Service Delivery in Nevada, including more detail on how consumers can become active participants in managing their energy use.
"Teaming with NV Energy to support its smart grid deployment will give customers more visibility and control in managing their energy use and transform the electric network into a robust, secure and intelligent system," said Guido Bartels, general manager, Energy & Utilities Industry at IBM and chairman, GridWise Alliance. "Our participation in the NV Energy Envision event demonstrates our commitment to educating consumers about the opportunities and benefits of smart metering and smart grid technologies."
NV Energy's Advanced Service Delivery (ASD) project will enhance demand response to manage power load from the electric grid in order to maintain system reliability and improve energy efficiency. In addition, ASD will provide customer service improvements including new digital meters, enhanced self-service options and access to a customer portal to manage energy use.
IBM software includes WebSphere and Data Power products.
