STMicroelectronics, one of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers, has published its corporate responsibility report for 2009. The report demonstrates how ST creates value for its stakeholders through its culture of sustainable excellence and has maintained its commitment to corporate responsibility despite the economic crisis.
Highlights of ST's performance in 2009 include:
- A strong focus on the integration of corporate responsibility in ST's core business through its responsible products, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, innovative healthcare applications and safer and more intelligent vehicles;
- A decrease of direct carbon emissions due to operations (in absolute values) of 58 percent since 2005, in line with the company's goal to achieve carbon neutrality on direct emissions by 2012;
- Performance in key health and safety indicators even better than the targets – e.g. in the field of safety the reduction was 12 percent in recordable case rate and 18 percent in severity rate, compared to the 10 percent reduction target for each rate;
- 66,000 voluntary medical examinations were carried out as part of the company's Health Plan, which aims to give all employees worldwide access to the same level of healthcare;
- A reduction of the potential impact of the economic crisis on the company’s workforce as a result of the implementation of its three-year restructuring plan, launched in 2007 and managed consistently with the specific intention of finding “softer” ways of reducing headcount.
- As part of its Digital Unity Program, the ST Foundation delivered its Informatics and Computer Basics course to more than 25,000 people, bringing the total number of people trained since 2003 to more than 81,000;
- 60 EICC (Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition) self-assessment questionnaires were filled in by ST's suppliers and subcontractors on the industry's E-TASC online portal;
- ST is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact and the report also serves as the company's Communication on Progress to the Global Compact Office. Verification of data and data collection processes was provided by Bureau Veritas Certification France. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has confirmed an A+ rating based on its G3 Reporting Guidelines.
