DOL grant to assist laid-off ATK workers in Utah

RP news wires

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a $1,234,762 grant to assist about 200 workers affected by layoffs at ATK Launch Systems in Corinne, Utah.

“The planned retirement of the space shuttle is already having negative impacts on workers around the country, including these individuals in Utah,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “This grant will ensure that that these aerospace workers will receive the training and services needed to keep them at the forefront of emerging industries.”

This grant will be awarded to and operated by the Utah Department of Workforce Services. If a pending Trade Adjustment Assistance petition for these workers is also approved, today’s grant will provide these dislocated workers with access to “wrap-around” and supportive services, such as dependent care and transportation assistance, that are not available through the TAA program. If the TAA petition is denied, the workers will have access to a full array of training and employment-related services under this grant.

Of the $1,234,762 announced, $616,165 will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
