The Shaw Group Inc. named Frederick W. Buckman president of the company’s Power Group. He will be based at Shaw’s Power Group headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., and report to Gary P. Graphia, Shaw’s chief operating officer. In this role, he will oversee Shaw’s premier capabilities in the fossil and nuclear power industry.
“Fred brings a wealth of both fossil and nuclear energy experience to the Power Group as Shaw continues to offer safe, efficient and clean energy solutions to its customers around the world,” said J.M. Bernhard Jr., Shaw’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Buckman has more than 30 years’ experience in the electric utility industry. Before joining Shaw, he was a managing partner responsible for the utility sector at Brookfield Asset Management in Toronto.
From 1999 to 2006, Buckman served as chairman and chief executive officer of Trans-Elect Development Company Inc., an independent company dedicated to the ownership, operation and development of electric transmission assets.
From 1994 to 1998, he served as president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp, helping transform the company from a regional utility to a significant international energy company. Before joining PacifiCorp, Buckman was president and chief executive officer of Consumers Power Company, the utility subsidiary of CMS Energy. Prior to becoming president, he served as chief nuclear officer of the company.
Buckman is a member of the board of directors for both StanCorp Financial Group and MMC Energy. He is also the president of the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies.
A graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in science engineering, Mr. Buckman received his doctorate in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and attended the advanced management program at Harvard Business School.
