Miami-Dade County’s official economic development partnership announced the successful collaboration with Schering-Plough Corporation to increase its manufacturing operations in the Florida county.

Schering-Plough Corporation is a global science-based health care company with leading prescription, consumer and animal health products. Through internal research and collaborations with partners, Schering-Plough discovers, develops, manufactures and markets advanced drug therapies to meet important medical needs. Schering-Plough is based in Kenilworth, N.J.

Emerging as a life sciences hub, Miami-Dade County is supporting the industry by encouraging investments and educational training via the numerous area universities and training centers.

Miami is home to world-class life science research institutions and companies such as Schering-Plough,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas of District 13. “It is important for our community to back and encourage the ongoing development of this industry, which will only make our Miami-Dade economy stronger and more diversified.”

The Beacon Council’s Business Expansion, Retention, Recruitment & Urban Initiatives Department assisted Schering-Plough by providing a competitive package of business contacts, referrals, and state and local incentives. Schering-Plough’s investment in Miami-Dade County includes the building out of an additional 10,000 square feet in its Miami facility. The expansion includes manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and office space that is necessary to support the company’s business operations.

“Major international Life Sciences companies have come to Miami because they recognize the region’s potential and see the extraordinary growth of the industry,” said Frank Nero, president and CEO of The Beacon Council. “Our connectivity to most of the world’s major markets, quality of life, world renowned educational institutions preparing a world-class workforce for the Life Sciences sector have helped Miami-Dade emerge as one of the top choices for companies like Schering-Plough.”
