Scheduled industrial projects in Texas reach $100 billion

Industrial companies in Texas are developing 987 major capital and maintenance projects totaling almost $100 billion scheduled to begin construction in 2007 or beyond. Forty-five percent of the total, $44.8 billion, is for 16, multi-billion dollar energy-related projects. The top four of which are nuclear power plant projects involving grassroot or expansion construction scenarios. For example, a $7 billion grassroot nuclear power plant is planned for Amarillo, Texas. Construction for the 3,200-megawatt power plant wouldn’t begin until 2011, at the earliest, if all approvals were attained.

In addition, there are 167 projects with a total investment value (TIV) of $100 million or greater.

The Power Industry accounts for 63 percent of the planned industrial project spending in Texas. In addition to major nuclear power projects, there are a number of large coal-fired projects along with renewable energy and natural gas projects scheduled.

Second on the list, after the Power Industry, is the Petroleum Refining Industry with 172 projects totaling $7.1 billion. Leading refiner, Motiva Enterprises LLC (Houston) has 23 projects planned including a $4 billion refinery expansion in Port Arthur, Texas.

The Industrial Manufacturing, Oil & Gas Terminals, Chemical Processing, Oil & Gas Transmission and Alternative Fuels each have more than $4 billion in planned projects. One of the larger projects to begin construction this year in Texas is a $300 million specialty PVC resin unit for Formosa Plastics Corporation USA in Point Comfort, Texas. Merit shop construction on the project is scheduled to be completed during the third quater of 2008.
