International Paper's pulp and paper mill in Cantonment, Florida, was recently shut down after experiencing significant structural damage to its largest pulp digester and powerhouse. No one at the mill was injured.
The incident on Jan. 22, 2017, released a mixture of wood fiber, water and pulping liquor into the surrounding community. Response teams have been working with local, state and federal agencies to provide information for those impacted. Contractors have also been engaged to develop and implement plans to clean up and dispose of the discharged material as quickly as possible.
International Paper will provide the necessary support and resources to the local community and residents while focusing to ensure the health and safety of its employees, contractors and neighbors as well as on the clean-up of the affected areas and property.
The Pensacola mill is not operating currently as the company assesses the extent of the damage, evaluates its supply options and works closely with its customers.
