Con-way Manufacturing recently announced that it has been honored with the 2013 Plant Safety Award from the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association (TTMA). This marks the fourth straight year and fifth time that Con-way Manufacturing has received this honor from TTMA; the company was also an award recipient in 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Under the TTMA Plant Safety program, award winners are selected based on an evaluation and ranking from injury data recorded with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Con-way Manufacturing won in the "C" category, which includes manufacturing plants that annually log 300,000 man-hours or less in operation.

The evaluation considered numerical data in seven areas: fatalities, total lost workday cases, total cases with job transfer or restriction, days away from work, days of job transfer or job restriction, total number of other recordable cases and total cases (of injuries).

"This award represents Con-way Manufacturing's belief that safety is everybody's responsibility and succeeds only with the support of every employee," said Lynn Reinbolt, president of Con-way Manufacturing. "Involving employees with a team approach to monitoring safety performance has a much more effective result compared to supervisor-directed mandates. I am proud of our whole team in setting this precedent."

This year marks the 43rd presentation of the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association Plant Safety Awards. TTMA is a member-based organization established to build confidence between manufacturers of truck trailers, cargo tanks, intermodal containers and their suppliers to bring about a mutual understanding of the problems confronting all manufacturers.

"Con-way Manufacturing consistently sets the standards for others in the industry to replicate when it comes to plant safety," said Jeff Sims, president of TTMA. "Their innovative safety practices are unprecedented, which is why they consistently come out on top in their category for this award."

Since receiving its first Plant Safety Award in 2004, Con-way Manufacturing has not only decreased its incident frequency rate by more than 800 percent but also grown by 120 employees during that time. One of Con-way Manufacturing's secrets to success is its behavior-based strategy, which produces results that improve every year.

For example, outfitted with bright orange shirts to signify the need for additional attention, new employees are placed on a six-month probationary period during which all plant personnel are responsible for monitoring their safety.
