You certainly couldn't say Stan McFarlane's company was doing poorly when he picked up the phone last fall for some outside advice about getting his latest agricultural tool to market faster. Just the opposite. The massive new piece of farming equipment – known as a reel disk and designed to plow and prepare a field for seeding in one pass behind a tractor – was selling so well that his manufacturing plant in Sauk City, Wis., couldn't keep up. And that meant he needed help, as surely as if his business was failing.
