Simio LLC announced that the North Carolina State University Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt program now includes classes using its new Simio simulation software.

“The class is designed for those who want to learn process simulation for making decisions or conducting process improvement projects, without being burdened with low-level programming,” said Jeffrey A. Joines, associate professor in the Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science Department at N.C. State University. “The idea is that Simio software is easy for non-experienced simulation users to use to build process simulation models that aid in process improvement projects.”

Classes will be of interest to operations managers in industries such as health care, defense, national security, mining, shipping, airports, supply chain and manufacturing. Simulation software is used to help minimize the risk of capital investments and clarify lean operation initiatives.

This class is part of the North Carolina State University Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt program. Attendees are not required to be part of the Six Sigma program, nor will it impact students’ ability in the class.

Prerequisites are general familiarity with computer programs like Excel and basic understanding of statistics. The course is designed in three parts.

·        Part I will be an introduction to simulation, statistics and distributions.

·        Part II will be introduction to process simulation with Simio.

·        Part III will cover advanced simulation topics with Simio.

Classes take place at N.C. State University on the Centennial Campus in Raleigh, N.C.

N.C. State University, voted one the top five universities for its value, offers continuing education credits (CES) for attendance. Instruction is provided by Steve Roberts (Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering) and Jeff Joines (Associate Professor of Textile Engineering).

About the Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt Program directors at N.C.SU

Jeffrey A. Joines is an associate professor in the Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science Department at N.C. State University and currently serves as the Associate Department head. He received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering and B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 1990, a M.S in Industrial Engineering in 1990 and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 1996, all from N.C. State University. In 1977, he received the Pritsker Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He also was awarded the 2006 N.C. State University Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Joines has been building object-oriented simulation languages since the early 1990s and applying these to manufacturing, supply chain, scheduling and health care problems. JeffJoines@ncsu.edu

Stephen D. Roberts has been a professor in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University since 1990. From 1990 to 1999 he served as Head of the Industrial Engineering Department at N.C. State. Previously, he spent four years as a professor at the University of Florida, and 18 years as a joint professor at Purdue and Indiana University School of Medicine. He has two years experience with TRW, Inc. and was Director of Health Systems Research Group, Regenstrief Institute for Health Care. He received the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award at Purdue and was an Associate Editor of Management Science and Simulation. He also is the developer of the INSIGHT and SLN simulation language.
