Sinopec (Beijing) has begun main construction work on a 1 million-ton-per-annum (TPA) ethylene project and its auxiliary 350,000 TPA phenol acetone project. Construction includes all eight facilities for ethylene production and all 11 facilities for oil refining. It is estimated that the installation for most of the equipment that make up the Tianjin ethylene project will be complete by the end of the year.
In recent years, China has worked to extend and improve its petrochemical industrial chain, and to establish petrochemical industrial bases and parks. The focus has been on forming three petrochemical groups in the Yangtze Delta, Pearl River Delta and Bohai Coastal Area. A series of 10 million-ton refinery and 1 million-ton ethylene integrated projects are taking shape.
Sinopec has said that 2008 is the key year for the Tianjin ethylene project. The infrastructure construction of the project will be completed, and equipment installation is the main task. The ethylene project in Tianjin consists of an ethylene unit, refinery renovation project and auxiliary thermal power renovation project. Upon its completion in 2009, Tianjin's ethylene production capacity will reach 1.2 million tons a year and its crude oil refining capacity will reach 12.5 million tons a year, making Tianjin Petrochemical one of the nation's top petrochemical industrial bases. Every year, Tianjin Petrochemical will produce 12 million tons of high-quality petroleum, petrochemical and chemical fiber products.
China's largest refining and ethylene integrated projects are: the 10 million-ton Dushanzi refining project; the 1 million-ton ethylene project in Xinjiang Autonomous Region; Fujian Petrochemical's 12 million-ton refining and 800,000-ton ethylene project; Zhejiang Zhenhai Petrochemical's 1 million-ton ethylene renovation project based on it existing 20 million-ton refining capacity; Liaoning Petrochemical's 1 million-ton ethylene upgrading project based on its 10 million-ton refining facility, the 800,000-ton ethylene project being constructed in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and its 10 million-ton refining project in planning; and the aforementioned Tianjin project.
