Podcast: Improve assembly with lean workcell components

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

Bosch Rexroth (www.boschrexroth-us.com/lean) has released a new lean manufacturing audio case history discussing a real-world example of how one company cut waste, improved quality and reduced waiting time using lean workcell components in its assembly operation.

The audio application story can be downloaded for free from the Bosch Rexroth lean manufacturing podcast page at www.boschrexroth-us.com/leanpodcast.

Featuring Mark Ellis, manager of product assembly at Bosch Security Systems (www.boschsecurity.us), this audio case history tells how the company benefitted from building a modular workcell line with components from Rexroth's Manual Production System (MPS).

Bosch Security manufactures, supplies and distributes closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and monitors, digital recording and switching systems, and IP network video products. When the company decided to replace their flagship AutoDome camera with new and improved modular units, they opted to implement a lean workcell that would offer more flexibility and avoid waste to help them meet production needs.

Rexroth provided Bosch Security Systems with aluminum structural framing, flow racks, workstation lighting, electrostatic discharge (ESD) surfaces, and other MPS products. Using Rexroth T-slotted aluminum structural framing as the foundation of the lean cell, all the work components are mounted in easily accessible locations.

Rexroth's ergonomic workstations allow parts bins, tools, shelves, and fixtures to be positioned in optimum locations for efficient work. The workstations support one-piece flow within the workcell and can accommodate complete schedule flexibility with no downtime for line changeovers. This results in a production flow without stoppages or delay.

The "Bosch Security Lean Manufacturing Case History" is episode No. 5 in Rexroth's lean manufacturing podcast series, available for listening or free download from the company's website at www.boschrexroth-us.com/leanpodcast. The podcast series is also available from the iTunes podcast library and other podcast directories on the Web.

Developed by Bosch Rexroth's Linear Motion and Assembly Technologies group, each eight- to 10-minute lean manufacturing podcast episode presents guest experts and information to help manufacturers and OEMs understand and apply lean principles and practices in their businesses.
