AK Steel recently announced that its coke plant in Middletown, Ohio, has received the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI), a leading industry trade organization. The award recognizes the company for operating one of the safest coke-making facilities in America during 2013.

AK Steel's Middletown Works coke plant, along with two other ACCCI member coke facilities, operated the entire year of 2013 without any recordable injuries.

"AK Steel is honored to be recognized by the ACCCI – an achievement that reflects the company's commitment to safety at all of our manufacturing operations," said James L. Wainscott, AK Steel chairman, president and CEO. "We congratulate everyone at our Middletown Works coke plant, as well as all those affiliated with our fellow Max Eward award winners, for their outstanding safety performance."

The ACCCI recognition marks the 14th time in the past 17 years that an AK Steel coke plant has received the Max Eward Safety Award. The company's Middletown Works coke plant is now a 10-time recipient of the award.

"The employees at AK Steel's Middletown Works coke plant continue to be role models for safety in the workplace," said Bruce Steiner, president of the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute. "We congratulate them and the company for promoting a culture of safety that continues to produce exceptional results."

In addition to AK Steel's Middletown Works coke plant, the company's plants in Rockport, Ind., and Zanesville, Ohio, operated the entire year of 2013 without any recordable injuries.

Headquartered in West Chester, Ohio, AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels for automotive, infrastructure, manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets.
