Manufacturing group praises vote on Roberts

The National Association of Manufacturers lauded Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Ranking Member Patrick Leahy (D-VT) for their leadership in confirmation hearings leading to a 13-5 vote to recommend John Roberts to the full Senate for confirmation as chief justice of the Supreme Court.

“Chairman Specter and Sen. Leahy led a dignified and judicious process that provided an opportunity for the nomination to be considered, debated and decided with thoroughness and comity,” said NAM President John Engler. “The majority of the Judiciary Committee understood that Judge Roberts is a thoughtful and talent jurist and an outstanding legal scholar who has the right experience and temperament to sit on the High Court and serve as its chief.”

Engler urged the full Senate to support Roberts’ confirmation when it is expected to take up the nomination next week.

“The overwhelming majority of federal and Supreme Court cases involve issues that impact business and manufacturing,” said Engler. “It is imperative that we have judges who understand these issues and their importance to the U.S. economy.”

NAM created a Judicial Review Committee this year to review federal judicial nominations for the organization’s support. In its first action, the committee unanimously endorsed the nomination of Roberts to the Supreme Court.
