Pactiv Corporation, a leader in the foodservice packaging industry, announced September 15 that it has scheduled the final phase of a nearly $12 million equipment upgrade to increase capacity for its line of expanded polystyrene food processor trays. The two-year program – to update selected extrusion, thermoforming, padding and packaging equipment in four manufacturing locations – is expected to be complete in early 2011 to meet anticipated customer demand.

“As a proven primary supplier to many of our large food processor customers, this investment ensures that we will be able to continue to provide quality products and service,” said Peter Lazaredes, Pactiv’s executive vice president and general manager, Foodservice/Food Packaging. “Food processors are responding to consumer preferences and we’re moving quickly to ensure continuous availability. Consumers prefer this type of meat packaging as the standard for freshness, quality, safety, and food flavor.”

Pactiv trays are used by food processors to package fresh meat, fish, and poultry. Strong and durable, Pactiv trays are a proven choice of food processors over the course of nearly 50 years. The trays are available in seven colors and a wide range of sizes and depths to provide food processors with a choice of display options. Light, sanitary, and durable, expanded polystyrene meets strict U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards for use in food contact packaging and is comprised of approximately 5 percent polystyrene and 95 percent air by volume.

Pactiv Corporation is a leader in the consumer and foodservice/food packaging markets it serves. With 2009 sales of $3.4 billion, Pactiv derives more than 80 percent of its sales from market sectors in which it holds the No. 1 or No. 2 market-share position. Pactiv’s Hefty brand products include waste bags, slider storage bags, disposable tableware, and disposable cookware. Pactiv’s foodservice/food packaging offering is one of the broadest in the industry, including both custom and stock products in a variety of materials.
