SME releases sixth edition of 'Fundamentals of Tool Design' textbook

Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Manufacturing practitioners, designers, educators, and students have been using the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ textbook classic “Fundamentals of Tool Design” for more than 40 years to gain an in-depth understanding of all the factors that impact tool success.

“As the go-to source for reliable manufacturing knowledge, SME is pleased to mark the continuing widespread use of this book as a key text for students, designers and practitioners,” said Mark C. Tomlinson, executive director & general manager of SME. “The sixth edition is further enhanced by the inclusion of a sampler DVD with video clips from the “Fundamentals for Tool Design” Video Series”. The availability of digital rights licensing for the series makes the programs the perfect complement to study online, delivering the concrete knowledge needed to spark innovation and resolve complex tooling challenges.”

The table of contents for the fully illustrated sixth edition includes: General Tool Design; Materials Used for Tooling;  Cutting Tool Design; Workholding Concepts; Jig Design; Fixture Design; Power Presses; Die Design and Operation; Inspection and Gage Design; Tool Design for Joining Processes; Modular and Automated Tool Handling; Computer Applications in Tool Design; and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

Among the updates, readers will find:

  • Revised geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) information to include ASME Y14.5-2009
  • An Instructor’s Guide with answers to the review questions in the book and information on how to incorporate the DVDs into classroom or online instruction
  • Expanded broaching examples and concepts
  • Revised tool material, mechanical definitions and reference tables
  • In-depth review of bushing applications
  • New appendices provide sources for tool design components, related websites and handy GD&T reference charts
  • More review questions at the end of each chapter

The book and nine DVDs are available as a package or individually to serve both educational and professional needs. And with the new opportunity for digitalrights licensing, manufacturers or shops with 50 or more employees can integrate the textbook and DVDs on a private and secure corporate Intranet. “This is a great option if your shop is looking for ways to standardize tooling training. It’s also a handy reference for problem-solving on the manufacturing floor,” adds Tomlinson.
