The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) recently presented David C. Dickson with its prestigious J.H. “Jud” Hall Composites Manufacturing Award during its Composites Manufacturing event at the Mission Valley Resort in San Diego, Calif.

The J.H. “Jud” Hall Composites Manufacturing Award recognizes an individual who has contributed to composites manufacturing or tooling technology through their leadership, technical developments, patents or educational activities.

“Dave has a genuine passion for composites and tooling which is evident in his 30-year career at The Boeing Company,” said Richard A. Lofland, FSME, co-chair of SME’s Composites Manufacturing Tech Group. “His selection as this year’s award recipient honors him for those years of dedication to the industry.”

Dickson is the 787 program tooling technology manager at The Boeing Company where he has spent his career designing, developing and promoting tooling for advanced composites. He joined Boeing Commercial Airplanes Tool Engineering shortly after graduating with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering technology from Arizona State University in 1979 and his first assignment was on a technology development program that fed directly into the B-2 Bomber program where he was instrumental in developing tooling methodology for the first large scale use of composites for aircraft structures.

“Dave takes a strong leadership role in the development of advanced composites training related to tooling,“ said his nominator Russell Hill, senior manager, tool and quality engineering at Boeing Defense, Space & Security. He’s developed and presented numerous internal training programs at Boeing as well as external webinars and graduate level classes for the University of Washington.”

Dickson has served SME in a variety of volunteer roles over the years including efforts to rekindle the University of Washington Student Chapter of SME and chairing the 2008 Tooling for Composites Advisory Committee.

SME’s Composites Manufacturing Tech Group presented Dickson with the award at a luncheon on April 21 at the Composites Manufacturing 2010 event.
