BLS report: New York lost 12,700 industry jobs in past year

New York lost more manufacturing jobs during the past year than any state but Michigan. A new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that New York lost 12,700 manufacturing positions between July 2004 and the same month this year. Michigan, with a decline of 15,600 manufacturing jobs, was the only state that was hit harder. Two other states lost more than 10,000 manufacturing positions between mid-2004 and mid-2005: Pennsylvania (down 11,200) and New Jersey (down 10,300). Oregon registered the sharpest increase of any state, adding 6,300 manufacturing jobs in the past year. Also higher were Alabama (up 5,400), Missouri (also up 5,400) and Minnesota (up 5,000). Twenty-three states registered increases in manufacturing employment, while 26 experienced declines. Wyoming's total was unchanged.
