Pittsburgh-based L.B. Foster Company announced December 23 that CXT Inc.'s (L.B. Foster's wholly owned subsidiary) Grand Island, Neb., manufacturing plant has received the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's (PCI) Award for Safety. L.B. Foster won the award in the 50- to 99-employee category.

According to John Kasel, senior vice president, manufacturing operations, "L.B. Foster places significant emphasis on safety and promotes it throughout the entire company. This award from the PCI recognizes the level of attention that our Grand Island facility has placed in sustaining an accident free work environment. We are proud of their accomplishment."

Per Dave Sanders, plant manager, Grand Island, "The PCI annually cites plants that have achieved exceptional safety in three categories. They measure performance as Lost Workdays Incidence Rate, Total Case Incidence Rate and DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) Incidence Rate. In each of the three categories our plant recorded zero, the best possible score. Only three other PCI certified plants in the US achieved the same score. We are very honored in be included with other such distinguished operations."

The company received this award at PCI's recent annual convention held in Texas.

In addition to Grand Island plant, the company also manufactures concrete ties at its Spokane, Wash., and Tucson, Ariz., plants. Both the Grand Island and Spokane plants are ISO 9001:2000 registered and PCI certified. All plants are capable of producing concrete ties for heavy haul mainline, high-speed commuter, light rail and industrial track construction and rehabilitation projects.
