DiversityInc has named Cummins Inc. to its list of the Top 50 Companies for Diversity for a fourth consecutive year. Cummins finished 26th on the magazine’s 2010 list, up from 42nd in 2009.

“The competition to be on the DiversityInc Top 50 list has grown again this year to 449 companies (a 12 percent increase),” said Luke Visconti, chief executive officer of DiversityInc. “In addition, the total data reflected increased diversity across all companies that competed,” he added. “That means Cummins has achieved a spot on our list as competition increased and as the competitors increased their accomplishments. This takes a remarkable commitment from top leadership.”

Cummins chairman and CEO Tim Solso said managing diversity is critical to the Company’s future.

"We have learned that bringing together people of different backgrounds and perspectives leads to more creative and innovative solutions to the complex challenges we face as a global company,” Solso said. “Our ability to celebrate and effectively manage diversity is critical to serving our customers and to the long-term success of our company."

To qualify for the DiversityInc list, companies had to employ at least 1,000 employees and complete a detailed questionnaire based on empirical questions about their diversity and supplier diversity initiatives. The list is now in its 10th year.

Jill Cook, vice president for human resources, and Lisa Gutierrez, executive director of global diversity, traveled to Washington, D.C., this month for the DiversityInc announcement.

"While this recognition is nice, creating the right work environment is a job never done,” Cook said. “It really comes down to thinking about why you might not be comfortable with someone, or who you might be excluding from something, and bringing him or her into whatever the issue might be. Only then can you tap into the synergies possible with a diverse workforce.”

Gutierrez said Cummins’ commitment to diversity gives the Company a competitive advantage.

“At Cummins, we've been on a proactive diversity journey, connecting who people are, how they think and how we can utilize their talents to achieve success,” she said. “We don't just talk about diversity. We put diversity into action to deliver on our vision, our mission and on our strategic principle of creating a great place to work.”
