Eastman Chemical Company has been ranked 95th on Newsweek magazine’s list of the 500 Greenest Companies in America.

“Eastman has a proud history of responsible environmental stewardship,” said Theresa Lee, senior vice president with responsibility for the company’s environmental, health, safety and security programs. “This recognition is further reinforcement of the sound practices and systems we have in place throughout the company to ensure a sustainable future for our employees, our communities, and our environment.”

The Newsweek Green Rankings is the first-ever report based on companies' actual environmental performance, policies and reputation. The report in the September 28 issue of Newsweek features a green ranking of America's 500 largest publicly-traded companies as measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees. The complete list can also be found on www.newsweek.com/green.

“At Eastman, we define sustainability as a commitment to create value through environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic growth,” said Mark Costa, executive vice president with responsibility for the company’s sustainability efforts. “We know that strong health, safety and environmental performance is foundational to our success and growth, and are very proud to be recognized for our efforts.”

The companies are ranked based on a number of criteria, including: each company's greenhouse gas emissions, toxic waste emissions and use of other natural resources. Newsweek and its partners also assessed the companies' management of environmental issues and policies, regulatory compliance and policies concerning climate change. The rankings also factor in the results of an exclusive reputational survey of CEOs, corporate social responsibility officers, members of the media, academics, and members of key environmental groups.

Eastman’s chemicals, fibers and plastics are used as key ingredients in products that people use every day. Approximately 10,000 Eastman employees around the world blend technical expertise and innovation to deliver practical solutions. The company is committed to finding sustainable business opportunities within the diverse markets it serves. A global company headquartered in Kingsport, Tenn., Eastman had 2008 sales of $6.7 billion.
