CPower, a leading energy management firm, on May 5 announced an energy conservation program for Spartech Corporation, an innovative plastics manufacturer. Spartech will use CPower's energy management "demand response" solution to reduce electric energy consumption at various facilities in North America, supporting the company's history of sustainable manufacturing.

Spartech has committed to curtail up to 10 megawatts (MW) of electricity capacity upon request by the regional transmission organizations responsible for calling demand response events when the grid is under stress. CPower will help manage this process at approximately 10 facilities throughout the United States. Spartech will reduce its electricity consumption during critical times when blackouts and brownouts are imminent, thereby reducing stress on the grid and decreasing the need for energy providers to generate additional power to meet demand.

"As we continue to look for new ways to become more energy efficient and reduce our environmental impact, it makes perfect sense to incorporate demand response programs into our sustainability efforts," said Marc Roberts, senior vice president of operations, Spartech. "After evaluating several providers, it became clear that CPower's expertise and services, especially in working with manufacturers with facilities nationwide and managing enrollment and participation in different regional programs, will help us achieve our corporate social responsibility goals."

"Spartech's commitment to sustainable business practices is well known and respected throughout the industry," said Gary Fromer, CEO, CPower. "We are very excited to lead their energy management program as part of the company's on-going sustainability efforts and look forward to evolving our relationship."
